Welcome to the start of the Summer Term in Dragonflies' Class! We are looking forward to learning all about the oceans and, particularily to our visit to the rock pools at Westward Ho!
Please see below the curriculum web and the parents' letter for this term.
We had a fantastic day at the RNLI in Appledore! The weather, although chilly, was calm enough for us to take part in a little sketching on the beach. The children enjoyed learning more about the wonderful work that the men and women do and how vital the service is. We discovered that they rely totally on public donations to keep going. They certainly are 'real life heroes'!
Spring Term in Dragonflies' Class ....
We are now well and truly into the Spring Term and Dragonflies are certainly working hard and, hopefully, having lots of fun along the way! On the 2nd of February we visited Rosemoor as part of our topic on plants and birds. (see photographs from the day below). The children were amazed to discover how many wonderful things there are in soil and they were fascinated by the sculptures dotted around the grounds.
In literacy we have enjoyed learning new skills such as using speech marks through our block of work on the lovely story 'Fatou, Fetch the Water!' by Neil Griffths. We have now moved on to focus on letter writing and discovering the types of sentences and apostrophes that can be found in different versions of 'Jack and the Beanstalk'.
In numeracy after Christmas we have worked very hard to develop our understanding of place value and addition and subtraction (yr1) multiplication and division and 3D and 2D shape (yr 2) and both year groups are now moving on from money to explore fractions of shapes and numbers. Dragonflies have enjoyed learning how to select different resources to support them in their learning (numberlines, beadstrings, 100 squares, numicon, cubes, drawing pictures) and we have certainly enjoyed developing our understanding through games such as 'Guess my Number' and 'Lions and Tigers' wereby the team who have made the biggest two or three digit number by rolling the dice win!
We have been very busy in Dragonflies' learning all about Uganda as part of multi-cultural week. We have a fantastic visitor, Winnie, who shared her photos, clothes, stories and food with us! As part of our work on birds we made bird feeders and wrote instructions to go with them. We have written a letter to our school in Africa explaining this and we have asked whether people feed birds in Uganda too! The photos below show us having fun during these days.
